Fire Prevention and Evacuation

Fire Prevention continues to be one of the top priorities within the Alpine Peaks Residents' Association and across the entire Tahoe Basin.

Defensible Space Surveys: In September 2019, the North Tahoe Fire District conducted a Defensible Space survey and initial assessment of each home in our neighborhood.  Following the survey's completion, the results were sent to each property owner.  This feedback was intended to guide members' efforts to create defensible space to comply with Placer County and California State defensible space requirements.  A description of these requirements for property owners, as well as landlords, can be found here.  If you would like to have the NTFD conduct a free survey of your property, you can sign up here.  Ward Valley is Area 3.

Wildfire Preparedness and Emergency Evacuation: It is critically important to 1) sign up for Placer Alerts, 2) prepare and practice a family evacuation plan, 3) pack an emergency Go Bag, especially on Red Flag Days, and 4) leave early when an evacuation is ordered.  The Placer Emergency Alert system recently changed.  If you previously signed up, confirm you are current and in the new system as shown here.

Should an evacuation order be issued, listen carefully to all emergency evacuation directions from law enforcement.  Each evacuation and fire situation is unique, and is dealt with in real-time by experienced staff.  Gathering at Sherwood/Alpine and/or attempting to leave by that forest service road is considered highly unlikely.  The NTFD characterized that option as a last, desperate act with low survival outcomes.  Be prepared and plan to evacuate early to avoid putting you and your family in a dangerous situation.

There are several very important evacuation documents below.  Please read them carefully and familiarize yourself with their contents.  It could save your life and the lives of your loved ones.  This information from North Tahoe Fire is an excellent resource for Emergency Preparedness with a number of useful links and topics.
